Into the Abyss
Lima, an educated, intelligent young Kazakh woman, is whisked away from her family and urban life by her brother, when groundless scandal surrounds her. In a backwater village, she teaches at the local school and lives with a local family, and is nudged towards an ill-advised marriage with the youngest son. Emotional and physical disaster ensue with the arrival of a young male teacher with unorthodox ideas and no care for the rigid, Soviet system of compliance to authority. This story, and its stark developments, are evoked with a smooth narrative style that is punctuated by passages of great poetic intensity, set against the fascinating background of Kazakh life and tradition.
This translation exposes Akim Tarazy, one of modern Kazakhstan's outstanding writers of fiction, to an international readership. |
