This book provides an un-biased and academic study of the development of Shi'a Islam. It would be well received by anyone wanting an in-depth academic study of the topic, from keen enthusiasts to academics.
S H M Jafri - Dr. Jafri was born in Lucknow, India, in 1938. He first studied Islamic Sciences at a traditional Muslim madrasa. He later obtained two Ph. D degrees: one from the University of Lucknow, India, the other from the School of Oriental and African Studies, of the University of London. He has lectured in Islamic Studies at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpar and at the American University of Beirut, where he held the Sheikh Zayid Chair of Islamic Studies, and became Chairman of the Department of Religious Studies. Until he left Beirut in 1976, Dr. Jafri represented the American University of Beirut at a number of international conferences and seminars, and has written extensively on various aspects of Islam. He has contibuted to the Encyclopaedia of Islam, and is co-author, for the historical terms, of the well known Arabiv dictionary Al-Munjid. He is at present coeditor of the Hamdard Islamicus, and academic quarterly journal of Pakistan.
